چکیده

Most of the available localization algorithms require pair-wise ranging between the nodes. The more accurate the ranging, the more precise the localization. In this paper, the problem of accurate ranging between sensor nodes in an underwater environment is considered. It is assumed that the underwater medium is composed of layers with an isogradient depth-dependent sound speed profile (SSP). For the range estimation, we first show how the pair-wise time of flight (ToF) measurement between the nodes is related to the nodes’ positions. Then, based on this relation, we propose a novel ranging algorithm for an underwater acoustic sensor network (UASN). The proposed algorithm is based on the ToF measurement of the first arrival ray which may be reflected from the surface or the seabed. Through several simulations we show that the algorithm performs superb, and meets the Cramér Rao bound (CRB) for different values of the measurement noise power.

Ranging in an Underwater Medium with Multiple Isogradient Sound Speed Profile Layers

In this paper, we analyze the problem of acoustic ranging between sensor nodes in an underwater environment. The underwater medium is assumed to be composed of multiple isogradient sound speed profile (SSP) layers where in each layer the sound speed is linearly related to the depth. Furthermore, each sensor node is able to measure its depth and can exchange this information with other nodes. Un...

Casson Fluid Flow with Variable Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity along Exponentially Stretching Sheet Embedded in a Thermally Stratified Medium with Exponentially Heat Generation

The motion of temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity of steady incompressible laminar free convective (MHD) non-Newtonian Casson fluid flow over an exponentially stretching surface embedded in a thermally stratified medium are investigated. It is assumed that natural convection is induced by buoyancy and exponentially decaying internal heat generation across the space. The dim...

Measuring the spatial distribution of sound pressure in a fish tank under laboratory conditions (Research Article)

Sound-related behavioural studies explore the effects of sound on underwater animals in tanks under controlled laboratory conditions. In this study, we aim to assess sound pressure distributions and gradients in a small-sized water-filled tank that can be used in behavioural studies to examine anthropogenic sound effects on fish and invertebrates and to raise awareness among scientists in the f...

Evaluation of underwater acoustic propagation model (Ray theory) in a river using Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System

Underwater acoustics is widely used in many applications, such as oceanography, marine biology, hydrography, fishery, etc. Different models are introduced to simulate the underwater acoustic propagation in the oceans and the seas. In this study, the Ray Theory model is used to simulate the acoustic wave propagation in a shallow-freshwater river (Gono River) located in western part of Japan. The...

A Simulation Study of Multi-path Characteristics of Acoustic Propagation in the Strait of Hormuz

Multi-path interference due to boundary reflection in shallow water acoustic communication poses a major obstacle to reliable and high-speed underwater communication system. In this study, initially 3D variations of field data such as sound speed, temperature and salinity in horizontal transects of the Strait of Hormuz were analyzed using the ROPME data. Later, data on typical sound speed ...
